Marvel at Đường Tàu: Hanoi Train Street

Next, head to Hanoi Train Street, a narrow alley with train tracks running through it. Twice a day, a train zooms past, just inches from the buildings. It’s an adrenaline-rush experience, and you’ll be amazed by how the locals carry on their activities on this street.

Pro tip: The train street schedule varies. On weekends, you have the most variability in train street times. If you’re visiting on a weekday and want to be on Hanoi train street when the train flies by, move your visit to the train street into the evening.

Regardless of whether you wait for a train or not, the sight of Đường Tàu (Hanoi train street) is worth seeing. I wandered by it when there was no train, and it is a must-see in your Hanoi Vietnam itinerary!

Note: Since 2020, the train street has been under closures due to the impact of tourism. I recommend being respectful and just snapping a picture while you walk past the famous train street. It’s okay to look down the street. Be respectful in this area and do not linger on the tracks!

Is Hanoi Walkable?

Hanoi is quite walkable, especially in the central districts. Everything I’ve put together in this 3 Day Hanoi Vietnam Itinerary is walkable, and easiest if followed in order.

However, If you choose not to follow the itinerary, consider joining a walking tour to learn more about the city’s history and culture. Many tours are available that cover different themes and areas of Hanoi. Walking tours are great for orienting yourself with the city you’re visiting, without the overwhelm of having to navigate yourself.

Pro tip: While walking is a great way to see the city, be cautious when crossing streets. Vietnam traffic is very hectic! Use crossings when available, and make sure you look both ways before stepping into the road. When crossing, don’t hesitate, walk confidently but carefully to the other side.

How many days in Hanoi is enough?

Three to four days is ideal to explore Hanoi’s main attractions, allowing time to soak in the culture, history, and cuisine. If you follow my Hanoi Vietnam itinerary, you won’t be disappointed! If you have extra days in Hanoi, I recommend spending some time just wandering and exploring.

Some other things I reccommend visiting and doing if you have extra time in Hanoi include the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, Lotte Observation Deck, and a Hanoi motorbike tour.

How many days do you need in Ha Long Bay?

A day trip is perfectly fine to experience Ha Long Bay and its caves. However, if you have extra time, consider spending at least two to three days exploring the bay and nearby islands!

Which area of Hanoi to stay in?

The best area of Hanoi to stay in is near Hoàn Kiếm Lake or West Lake. The reason is that many of the main sights in Hanoi are located around these lakes, making them easily accessible from where you’re staying.

Should I visit Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?

Firstly, both cities offer different experiences. Whether you visit Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City should be based on which experience you’d like to have.
