One of the highlights of any visit to Kilkenny is wandering the city’s wonderfully preserved medieval streets and lanes. Around every turn, something new catches your eye – an ornately carved door, brightly painted pub façade, or edifice with incredible architectural details. One of my favorite spots is the Butterslip Lane area along the river. With old stone bridges, historic mills, and the ruined Blackfriar’s Abbey, it encapsulates the city’s medieval magic.

Overlooking the River Nore, Matt the Millers is a favorite spot, proudly boasting “LIVE MUSIC, FOOD & CRAIC“! Matt the Millers in Kilkenny is a must-visit for its lively atmosphere, traditional Irish music sessions, and pints of Guinness served in a beautifully preserved 16th-century merchant’s house. I found it a fantastic spot for a lively dinner and drinks while in Kilkenny.
